Black Women and Biblical Theology

Reconciling cultural opposition while balancing the norms of religion can be a challenge, and this is especially true for Black people, particularly Black women from or currently living in the Deep South. Today’s brief but rich devotional is a quick dip into understanding the importance of Black women in theological teaching, and the pressing need to train up more of them.

For years, I've struggled to reconcile my identity as a Black woman with the ideals of Biblical Womanhood that I've heard. Upon me growing a passion for sound doctrine and theology, I unintentionally thought the two could never marry. Unbeknownst to me, Christ was only calling me to submit my Black Womanhood to him, not omit it.

Long story short, It's taken me until recently to realize that not only does westernized Christianity suck, but westernized ideals of Biblical Womanhood do as well. I'm throwing it all away!

This, among many other reasons, is why we should support black, theologically sound, writers and teachers of the Gospel more. There needs to be an emergence of women who celebrate the beautiful and complex reality of black womanhood, whilst holding an unwavering grasp on the comprehensive Word of God.

My aim here at Relentless is to use the small platform God has provided me to teach sound doctrine in the context of Christ from a Black woman’s perspective. I hope you’ll join me on this Relentless journey.
